Volsk

Volsk () is a town in Saratov Oblast, Russia, located 147 km to the north-east from Saratov, on the right bank of the Volga River, opposite the mouth of the Bolshoy Irgiz, the Volga tributary. Population: 71,124 ( 2002 Census); 65,500 (1991 est.). It was founded in 1690 as sloboda of Malykovka, received town status and renamed Volgsk () in 1780. In the 19th century the name gradually changed to more pronounceable "Volsk". After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Volsk became a major center of cement production.
